Timeless and modern reed roof 

Cane is used to make reedplates, to entwine matts and to build durable roofs. A well constructed and maintained reed roof lasts for many decades and may even celebrate its centesimal birthday.

Reed is a really good material for building roofs. It preserves energy and warmth, so the insulation leyer under the roof can be minimal. The roof works as a natural  insulator and ensures natural humidity inside the house. It’s never hot in summer or cold in winter. Reed is soft and a quite flexible  material, very different shape of roofs are made of it.

The average lifetime of the reed roof is about 60 – 80 years, in case of good service even longer. The roof hips that are often damaged by the weather need to be renewed every 10 – 15 years.

The best time for building a new roof or repairing an old one is the dry period when it doesn’t rain. The roof made from moistured cane is not durable and tight enough. The cain used on the roof has to be dry, cleaned and high quality.

It is widely thought that the reed roof is very flammable. The truth is: the reed roof never catches fire when all the safety standards are followed,.  In case a fireplace really emits its sparks directly into the chimney a spark catcher needs to be plced on topp of it. The reed roof may also be impregnated using special chemicals to ensure integrity, but it needs to be renewed every 5 years.

The correct slope and the thickness of the roof are very important. The typical thigkness of the reed roof is 30 cm; the slope has to be 45 degrees at least. The bigger the slope is the less the reed roof absorbes moisture and the longer the roof lasts. The minimal slope must not be less than 37 – 38 degrees.

According to the length of the reed the step of the roof lath has to be 30 – 40 cm.  A square metre of reed roof takes about 10 bunches of reed. According to the European standard, the bunch is a reed bundle with the diametre of 63 cm. The weight of  a square metre of reed roof is about 40 kg.

The price of a square metre of reed roof depends on the amount and the quality of reed, the complexity of work and ancillary works needed to do.
